District of π is a relatively new pizza joint in the DC area. I have no idea how new it is because I only heard about it because it made an appearance on Zeynep's legendary "Restaurants To Try" list. We went on a Sunday a little before noon and there was little to no wait and we were shocked because noon is prime brunch time in DC. I mean they don't have brunch at District of π but if you're one of those people that doesn't like brunch this could be a great option.
The restaurant is located off the Chinatown Gallery Place Metro making it a perfect choice when you don't want to wait forever for Matchbox and you're catching a show at the Verizon Center. The decor is warm and very inviting. The service was great. Halfway through our meal the people at the table next to us managed to drop their entire pizza on the floor. The staff was quick to clean it all up and get another pizza in the oven for them. No problem. Our waitress took a lot of time describing the difference between Chicago Deep Dish pizza and what they serve at π which is St. Louis Deep Dish. The difference is in the crust, instead of a regular pizza crust St. Louis style crust is made with cornmeal. Fancy! Here's what we ordered:
Fresh Mozzarella with Sun Dried Tomato and Arugula
What's in it? all of the ingredients are in the name except for the star of the dish-- pesto. You can't even see it in the picture because it's under all of the mozzarella.
What we thought: Zeynep and I both agreed that we could have used a little more pesto because it was oh so good. It's definitely an app we'd get again.

| Pretty! |
What's in it: Field greens, toasted almonds, gorgonzola cheese, dried bing cherries with raspberry vinaigrette.
What we thought: The raspberry vinaigrette was amazing combined with the dried bing cherries was fantastic. Next time we go I could definitely see myself eating that entire salad as my meal.

What's in it? Mozzarella, italian meatballs, red peppers and basil.
What we thought: The cornmeal made the crust crunchy and it was delightful. I wasn't a big fan of the meatballs. It sounded like a good idea, but I wished we'd gone with something more classic.

In Summary:
We really liked it. The atmosphere, service and food were fantastic! After all of that food Zeynep and I needed to walk around a bit. We missed the Cherry Blossoms but we did get to see the tulips at the National Garden.
If you check out District of π let me know what you think.
